A BEAT bobby, who blasted Roma gipsies as ‘society’s worst nightmare’ is being investigated
for making unprofessional comments.
PC Nick Bond has been reported to Thames Valley Police’s Professional Standards Department
after calling Romanian gipsies a ‘plague to their own countrymen’ exclusively in last week’s
Observer.
But local residents have backed him for having the courage to speak out. Supt Peter Davies,
Local Police Area Commander for Slough, issued a statement this week saying: “I would like
to apologise to anyone who has been offended by his comments.
Rev Derek West, of St Peter’s Church in Church Street, Chalvey, said: “Nick Bond is a
very good bobby. He knows and talks to the community. I think his observation
on the Roma situation is possibly correct because lots of people here are scared
of them. He cares about the community and should be applauded for that.”
PC Bond told Chalvey Community Forum on May 23 that officers have difficulty in dealing
with the Roma community because many can not speak, read or write English and often
supply false names and addresses.
PC Bond, a married father-of one, who has been with the force for more than 10-years,
was given the Berkshire East Commander’s Commendation Award last year for going
beyond the call of duty.
